There are a number of different ways to start an apprenticeship in the resource trades. See the four steps brochure here.
High School is a good place to start planning your career. Do some research or ask your career educator about SSA Secondary School apprenticeship and/or ACE IT - Accelerated Credit Enrolment which can give you a kick start in a trade of your choice through on the job and/or classroom based training AND you can also earn credits toward graduation for doing so.
Foundation Programs are pre-apprentice programs which allows you to learn the basics of the trade of your choice as well as credits toward your level 1 technical training should you decide to pursue the trade. If you want to try out a trade but aren't ready to commit to a full program this may be the route for you. Foundation programs generally take a few months to complete and are offered at various colleges throughout BC.
If you already know which trade you wish to pursue and have an employer to sponsor you, then you just need to register as an apprentice with the ITA (Industry Training Authority) www.itabc.ca along with your employer.
You may have worked in your trade for several years but would like to be certified. You can register as an apprentice and get credit for hours and experience already completed. Contact the ITA customerservice@itabc.ca for more details.
