Machinist

Machinists work with machines. Go figure. Their job is to use a lot of different tools to make or modify parts, (mostly metal parts) in a process called machining. Machinists are most often needed when parts need to be made from a material by cutting. They will inspect the finish product for flaws and ensure the product is made to the proper specifications. They must also be able to write programs for Computer Numeric controlled (CNC) machine tools and read blueprints and CAD files in order to create finished products from the design stage. When it comes to making a small batch of custom pieces, machinists will manufacture them instead of using a full production line. In this job, it’s not man vs. machine. You have to work with the tools to produce a variety of objects from single-purpose tools such as mills, lathes, micrometers, cutting bits and grinders. If you can set up a machine for a wide range of tasks, you’ll be a greater asset.
